Held in a warehouse at the Saigon Port, the eighth in Dep’s annual series was the biggest fashion show of the year, and it left many agreeing it was the best fashion event ever pulled off in Vietnam.

Freedom was the theme, a provocative concept in these parts, and while the show wasn’t nearly as outré as what you might see in Milan or New York, boundaries were pushed ever so slightly. Designer Le Ha’s gender-bending Wo-Men remixed staples of menswear into a women’s-only collection. Tom K Nguyen’s Beyond the Limit contained the most overt message of the night, as two baby-doll carrying male models marched off the runway hand in hand.

Ha Truong’s As I Am went for the party vibe with a live DJ and lots of leather, veils and chiffon. The opening presentation, Like a Bird by Do Manh Cuong was the most intriguing of the night, a couture collection featuring feathers, wires and bright primary colors, with models and dancers acting out the avian theme.

The main complaint is that the event ran too long, but from music to staging to the designs themselves, Dep Fashion Show 8 took a noticeable step forward for Vietnam.
